Things to take into consideration when.....

Notice  of some importance....

It has come to our attention that some clue co-ordinates  are out , off - just not quite right...

So, on September 11th, 2002 - at Belstone Common - we decided to have an independent compass testing.

We used three compasses in this field test; and three persons conducted this test.  We took measurements from these three boxes in exact spots; and with each of the three compasses.

The people in this test were, a woman(myself), a man, and a young man of 10 - the later being the only one who didnt need glasses to read any of the compasses.

Man and woman needed glasses to read the results of two compasses, both Silvas - 1st) Eclipse Pro 99(£50+); 2nd) standard (£8) Silva compass.  The 3rd being the Silva Expedition 54 - all could read the results without wearing glasses.

All readily admit that the Expedition 54 was quickest, and easiest to use.  That on some readings taken at the three test letterboxes - the result for all three compasses were the same; then there were on accasion small variations between the three of ½ - 2 ½ degrees readings.  The Eclipse Pro required two actual readings to get the final result - and this made for error.

On finding a letterbox from a set of clues - we found that the simple inexpensive compass was less likely to find the box; that the Pro 99 had some success; but the averages for finding the box that you were seeking was greater and more consistant with the Silva Expedition 54.

So, please be thoughtful and forgiving if the letterbox you are seeking isnt exactly where it is supposed to be - as the compass they were using to site with may not have been the one that ranks up there with yours.

*As well, from our own experience - we have found a number of our own boxes have been re-located and not by us...so, it may not be from fault of the person who has taken the co-ordinates in the clues - that the boxes arent where they should be.
